Welcome to the 2nd week of March! Jeanne has for us a great sketch challenge! I can’t wait to see where your mind goes with this. If you would like, please post the card you create, to our challenge photo gallery at CAS Colours & Sketches #460.

Don’t know about the rest of you, but March weather rolled in like a lion in my corner of the map. Are you familiar with the saying “In like a Lion out like a Lamb”. Unfortunately, in my mind, that saying has become a bit more cynical than its meaning was originally intended. As you will soon see from what I was inspired to create, current world events have taken over my thoughts.

However, in an effort to lighten the mood – I researched the saying and found this: According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the weather folklore stems from ancestral beliefs in balance, meaning if the weather at the start of March was bad (roaring, like a roaring lion), the month should end with good weather (gentle, like a lamb). The Paris Review outlines a few origin theories for the March folklore, including an astronomical connection. In March, the Leo zodiac is the rising sign and when we reach April, it is a ram. A more religion based meaning for the saying is “Jesus’s first appearance was as the sacrificial lamb, but he will return as the Lion of Judah, hence those symbolic animals,” The Guardian writes. This may also stem from the Easter holiday, which lands sometime between late March and into April. – found online at: Nextstar Media Wire.

I thought this was a very interesting sketch. I was away at a swim meet with my daughter while I was trying to think about what this sketch was saying to me. Then some very unfortunate world events took over my thoughts. This invasion has completely upset my heart and mind. If I wasn’t focused on my daughters swims, I was trying to figure out what was going on over there. With all that research came a discovery that the Sunflower is the Ukrainian National Flower. I had already surmised that their flag colors were Blue and Yellow, put those 3 things together and it becomes a thing of beauty. Once I got started I just couldn’t stop. I have created several cards, journal pages, you name it, in honor of Ukraine. This card has a sister card – they are the positive and negative of each other, the yin and yang. I can only hope that peace talks are effective and that a peaceful, productive, humane agreement can be reached.

Using Pacific Point and Daffodil Delight I created a water color background that I would then cut up to use for these two cards and others. The Sunflower comes from the Celebrate Sunflowers Stamp set and the coordinating Sunflower Dies. The sentiment comes from the Here Together Stamp set.
