Card Challenges

Rooted in Nature in between the Woodland

Hey everyone, thanks so much for stopping by, glad you could spend a minute with me.

Today I have a card for you that was created for Global Design Project challenge #200, #GDP200. How exciting is that, 200 challenges on the shelf. This weeks challenge is to CASE the designer – Janneke De Jong. She is a Global Design Project team member from the Netherlands. She created the gorgeous card pictured below. So simple, so beautiful – very elegant.

CASE = Copy And Selectively Edit

I tried very hard to keep this card quiet, simple and understated. This card feels very peaceful to me, I love nature, hiking, the woods, the smells of the woods, etc. With school starting in 3 days for my kids, I also find myself very much in a Fall/Winter kind of mood. Thus a pretty wintery chilly feeling card. This card really comes together very quickly and very easily.

The card base is Whisper White Thick card stock cut to 4-1/4″ x 11″ scored at 5-1/2″, a standard top folding card. Using the Woodlands Embossing Folder (my favorite ever), I dry embossed a piece of Whisper White Cardstock cut to 4″ x 5-1/4″.

Before embossing however, I dabbed a bit of Seaside Spray in the lower corner (I used another color for the photo, easier to see and I hope help explains better then my words can.) The color is on the side with the Stampin’ Up! logo, this is the side where the area behind the trees is elevated, the opposite the tree trunks are elevated. For this card I used a stamp from Do What you Love to help provide the blotchy look – organic smooshed look, without actually smooshing and getting the color where I don’t want it.

With the background now finished, I moved on to the focal image. This image comes from one of my very favorite stamp sets, Rooted in Nature. On a scrap piece of Whisper White, I stamped the double spruce tree image using a combination of Mossy Meadow, Old Olive and Crumb Cake inks. Always start light, progressing to the darker color so the ink pads don’t get contaminated. It is always an option to use daubers to place color. I was feeling lazy and just used the ink pads. The trees were cut out using the coordinating die. The I cut a 2″ circle from a scrap piece of Crumb Cake card stock, then dry embossed it with the Corrugated DTIEF.

Now it is time to assemble all the pieces. I wrap the Linen Thread around the Whisper White embossed panel 3 times and tie in a knot. I placed Glue dots strategically on the front (under the circle) and on the back to hold the thread in place. The trees are adhered to the corrugated circle with liquid adhesive, that finished element is adhered to the embossed panel with liquid adhesive over the glue dots holding the string in place. The sentiment comes from Free as a Bird.

I attached the finished panel to a piece of craft foam with liquid adhesive and then attach that to the card base. I love the stability that a full piece of foam offers any and all raised panels. It goes through the mail perfectly. This is a very wierd comment, but I love the extra bit of weight the foam adds to the card as well, it feels just right in the hand. There is no flexing in gaps from lack of dimensionals. I will admit straight away, I picked this up from the Queen of the card making scene, my idol, my muse, the person I aspire to be…..Jennifer McGuire. Microphone drop!

To bring out the frosty feel further, I adhered some white/opalized sequins from the Metallic Sequin Assortment. Not to forget the inside, in the lower corner is the single spruce image from the same stamp set, using the same colors.

I am so glad you had a minute to spend with me today and I hope you enjoyed this card. I absolutely love it. If you would like to learn more about this challenge, learn more about the Design Team or would like to see what others created for this challenge, hop on over to Global Design Project . It is now time for me leave, but I shall return soon with something new. In the mean time keep crafting, exploring and creating. See you very soon.
