This week at CAS Colours & Sketches, Joanne is putting our creativity to the test with this Sketch Challenge. As always we would love to see what you create so please feel free to post your creation in our blog gallery.
The more simple a challenge appears, to me, seems to make it that much more difficult. The less is more concept seems to stifle my brain! At any rate, I wanted to get inky a bit and couldn’t leave a sentiment to just stand alone….can’t do it! I pulled out my watercolor paper and began to play with the first 2 colors that came to mind – in this case yellow (Bumble bee) and blue (Pacific Point) – using the smooshing technique. I created a ton of backgrounds using first generation color and then second generation color.
So now I have a ton of light background as well as darker backgrounds. Then I couldn’t decide which generation I liked, of course each smoosh turned out vastly different. So when in doubt, let your thoughts run the gamete and create whatever comes out. So how did I choose a background? Well, it was a very scientific process – took all 1st generation smooshing prints, turned them face down and had child #1 select a card any card. Child #2 chose a card any card of the 2nd generation prints.
The 1st generation smoosh turned out to work best as a landscape card, which happened to meet the sketch criteria. The 2nd generation smoosh worked best as a portrait orientation. Then I couldn’t decide if I wanted to raise the panel with craft foam from the card base or attach the panel directly to the card base. 2 cards gave me the flexibility to see how that played out. My concern is the watercolor paper is bit more yellow than the Basic White Card base – I thought if they were touching it might look a bit off. I also thought if the panel was elevated the shadow would offset the color difference. I think the elevated panel looks better on the card, what do you think?
The sentiment was already a done deal in my mind – it was to be white embossed, but how would white work on the 2nd generation smoosh….I think they both turned out really well in the department. I did add a touch of splatter to the 2nd smoosh (portrait) panel for a bit more variation. Inside both cards I simply stamped the flower image in Bumblebee and the berries in Granny Apple Green.
They both turned out so differently, its hard for me to pick a favorite…..but if push came to shove I think I would choose the Landscape card – 1st generation smoosh – with the White embossing.

Wow! Two amazing cards! I’m totally in love with those fabulous artsy backgrounds!
Shannon your backgrounds are great – when I try this they turn into a hot mess every time!! If you need ideas for using your leftovers, you should definitely check out Deborah Wheeler’s blog – she is a whizz with inky backgrounds!
Both cards are wonderful. I love the color combo!
Gosh, I really like both of the cards. I LOVE your scientific approach with child #1 and child #2. Ingenious! LOL I am leaning towards the landscape card. I like the deeper color and the landscape orientation.
