Just before heading out of 2019, I was invited by CAS Colours & Sketches to become a team member in 2020. I am so excited to present my first card, for Color Challenge #352, as a Design Team Member of CAS Colours & Sketches. What an exciting start to 2020.
This card uses a new stamp set from the Stampin’ Up! release of the 2020 January – June Mini Catalog (Spring/Summer). The entire Suite, Peaceful Poppies Suite is hands down my most beloved of this new release. Prepare yourselves for a Poppy Parade of cards this week, I went crazy.
Poppies are such a distinguished flower I have to give you a bit of history, simply out of respect. The Red Poppy was adopted by the Royal British Region to honor every life that was lost during World War I. The White Poppy is a symbol of peace and remembrance for all war victims from WW1 to present day. The two colors are typically presented side by side, however, at times the White Poppy will take the place of the Red Poppy.
Just about every color is in remembrance/observance of a group of people or a token of well wishing. I was aware of the red and white varieties, but had no idea there were so many colors. Near and dear to my heart is the Purple poppy, which represents all animals that lost their lives in any war. For the record pink and yellow poppies, since the Victorian Era, represent Imagination, Success, Wealth and Luxury. Perfect sentiments for the start of a new year!
The Poppy images from the Painted Poppies Stamp set, are stamped in Petal Pink and So Saffron on Watercolor paper. With an Aqua Painter, I filled in all the petals, then followed with a Petal Pink and So Saffron Stampin’ Write Marker to intensify the shadows. Bermuda Bay is stamped off about 3 times (I think) then stamped around the Poppies to offer a bit of skyline/grounding. Using a Black Stampin’ Write marker I doodled in the stamen. The water color piece is cut down to a square that would fit within a die cut scalloped square piece of Petal Pink.
The sentiment ” Each day is a New Beginning” comes from another new stamp set from the 2020 January – June Mini Catalog called Morning Star. With the New Year just starting and the Poppies being a flower of such significant meaning I felt this was a fairly appropriate sentiment for this card. The sentiment is heat embossed in gold on a piece of Very Vanilla Card. I used snips to create the fishtails on each end then matted it with a piece of petal pink.
As always the inside is not to be forgotten. To carry the gold through a bit further, a side view poppy image is gold heat embossed in the lower left corner.
Thanks again for stopping by and spending a bit of your time with me. I hope you enjoyed learning about how this card came together. Hopefully you were even inspired just a bit. I had no idea the significance of poppy colors. Your card is beautiful!
Thank you, I figured if I needed to know the poppy background others could be interested too. So glad you were interested.
I was so interested to hear about the poppy and what it stands for Shannon – just shows that whatever you think you know, there’s plenty more to learn! I love your delicately coloured poppies and they look beautiful in the pink scalloped square. Congratulations on being invited to be on the design team!
