I am an art journaler! To take what I keep closed up in a journal and get it out on a card was freeing and terrifying all at the same time. Freeing because its a different avenue…a card rather than a journal. Terrifying because I don’t typical show off my journal and this is not what I usually apply to cards. I just got a quirky bug that said to do it, so I took a deep breath and did it! Using 99% of Stampin’ Up! product including January’s Paper Pumpkin. The 1% non Stampin’ Up! product would be the Deli paper (tissue paper), Posca Paint Pens, black and gold gesso and Liquitex matte medium (a watery glue that dries matte).
If you aren’t familiar with art/junk journaling, it tends to be all about layers (a lot or very few – it up to you). Start with a substrate – water color paper or thick cardstock, I tend to stay between 100# – 140# paper . The heavier the paper the better off the piece most likely will be in the end. Art journaling quite often is mixed media which means so many things and whatever you want to throw at it. Watercolors – thus water, glue, pastes, mediums, acrylic paint (which can be watered down), oil paints, chalk, paper, fabric, ribbons, chipboard embellishments, heavy metal embellishments…the list is endless. Heavier papers are always the safest bet!
To start, I created what could be called a Master Board. Typically this is the piece you keep, take to the copier to print it on other papers and then use those prints to collage with. In this case, I started on a piece of deli paper (tissue paper) stamping the heart images in the Heartfelt stamp set and the Floral Background stamp from the January Paper Pumpkin, in Memento Tuxedo Black and Real Red Inks. The ink will soak through the tissue paper quickly, be sure to protect your work surface. Then came the doodling with permanent marking pens such as Posca Paint Pens, Permanent Markers like Sharpie or India Ink products that will dry permanent. The key is to not think much at all about what is going down on the paper. Just do it, if it looks wrong/bad/off, add another layer of something. Once I finished all the doodling and stamping, I left it to dry. I tore up the tissue into strips to accommodate these tags and to also allow for a strip to be collaged onto a card that will posting soon.
For the collaging part, reach for your choice of gluing mediums for collage. Some folks you Elmers School Glue – though that doesn’t dry clear or mat. Some use Modge Podge which is sufficient, I prefer a product called Fluid Matte Medium. This is a more watery glue that does dry clear and mat. The Real Red ink used on this Deli paper going on these cards (and upcoming card) will react when touched by the mat medium (or product of your choice). Everything is water-based except for the Memento Ink. This is my intent, as this will add a subtle pink hue to all the pieces as the tissue is attached to the tag substrate. Once attached allow to dry thoroughly to add the focal points and other layers. For minor focal points on the tags, I cut out the foiled hearts from the From my Heart Specialty Designer Series Paper with the heart punches and glued them to the tags with liquid glue. With one of the Basic Pattern Decorative Masks (stencils), I added modeling paste to the fronts of the tags in random places. Step away, allow that layer to dry thoroughly. Once dry, I gold embossed random areas on the tags, predominately over the modeling paste pattern. With my fingers, I applied black and gold gesso in random places to grunge up the pieces and add interest. The final layer is the focal point sentiment. For the Real Red and Flirty Flamingo stamped hearts I stamped in that color ink on Whisper White card stock followed with Versamark, then clear embossed it for shine. The black and gold hearts are purely black or gold embossed. I thought about distressing the edges of these hearts, but decided they needed to pop.
Final step is punching the hole at the top, adding an eyelet for reinforcement and pulling through the strands of fabric and ribbon from my stash.
Thanks again for stopping by and spending a bit of your time with me. I hope you enjoyed learning about how this card came together. Hopefully you were even inspired just a bit. Below are pictured links to all the items used for this card, click the link of the item to be taken to my online store where you can learn more about each item. I will return soon with something new. Until then, stay safe, stay healthy and without doubt, keep on crafting, exploring and creating.
