A bit of grunge for a Valentine

I am an art journaler! To take what I keep closed up in a journal and get it out on a card was freeing and terrifying all at the same time. Freeing because its a different avenue…a card rather than a journal. Terrifying because I don’t typical show off my journal and this is not what I usually apply to cards. I just got a quirky bug that said to do it, so I took a deep breath and did it! Using 99% of Stampin’ Up! product including January’s Paper Pumpkin. The 1% non Stampin’ Up! product would be the Deli paper (tissue paper), Posca Paint Pens, black and gold gesso and Liquitex matte medium (a watery glue that dries matte).
If you aren’t familiar with art/junk journaling, it tends to be all about layers. Start with a substrate – water color paper or thick cardstock #100+ . It can be mixed media which means so many things and whatever you want to throw at it. A lot of liquid, glue, pastes, heavy embellishments. The heavier the paper the better off the piece will be.
This card does not have a lot of layers so I went with a Whisper White Thick card base cut to 4-1/4″ by 11″ scored at 5-1/2″ for a top folding “tent” card. The left strip is the art journaling portion of the card and is on a strip of Whisper White thick, the right strip is basic black card with gold heat embossed hearts from the Heartfelt Stamp set. The edges are distressed with the Craft white ink pad and Delicata Golden Glitz ink pad. Real Red 3/8″ ribbon and 1/4″ Gold Shimmer Ribbon cover the seam. The sentiment is created with the Heartfelt heart stamps, the bottom is the large scalloped image gold heat embossed, the top is the sentiment heart image stamped with real red then clear heat embossed. They are glued together then distressed with Black Stazon Ink.
The left strip is first created by stamping whatever images I could throw at a piece of Deli Paper / Tissue Paper in Stazon Black Ink Real Red Ink. I used all the heart images from Heartfelt Stamp set as well as the floral background stamp from the January Paper Pumpkin. With Black and Red Posca Paint pens I wrote and doodled where ever the pen nib was led, then left to fully dry. Then I cut a strip for this card and used the rest to create the tags you have already seen. The deli paper was cut to accommodate this card and the 7 tags you have already seen. The tissue was applied to the Whisper White thick substrate for this card with the matte medium and the side of an old gift card. Note of caution: Tissue paper is very thin, the inks soak through so always put a protective layer under the tissue. The Real Red ink is a water based ink, it will reactivate when touched by liquid, this is the effect I wanted to create a pinkish background color in places. Apply matte medium to the substrate, attach the tissue/deli paper, then cover the surface with an additional layer of matte medium. Walk away for a coffee, water, wine, snack, etc. Matte medium dries fairly quickly, but with 2 layers it still takes a bit of time. Then I attached with liquid glue the punched out hearts from the From my Heart Specialty Designer Series Paper in the From My Heart Suite. Now it is time to play in the paint. With my finger just began to finger paint smearing first black and then gold wherever my finger went, also focusing on “distressing” the edges.
From the Basic Pattern Decorative Mask Stencil set, I selected the rounded square/diamond pattern and pushed embossing paste through with a palette knife, where ever it felt like there should be pattern/texture, something a little more. Let it dry. Lightly rub Versamark over the textured areas, then gold heat emboss those areas.
Once everything was dry and ready to go, I attach the Gold embossed Black strip and the Art Journal strip to a whisper white matte. The Ribbons are wrapped around the panel to cover the seams. This panel is attached to a Real Red matt, then attached to the Whisper White Thick top folding Cardbase.
As you know, I am not one to leave the inside of my cards naked and I felt the need to carry the grunge look to the inside. I cut a real red heart with the heart punch, stamped the smaller heart image inside with Stazon then distressed the side of the heart and attached it to the card base. It needed some gold, so I gold heat embossed the arrow from the stamp set.
