Card Challenges

Global Design Project #GDP187

Hello everyone, so glad you could stop by for a bit.

Today I bring to you a card created for a challenge put out by Global Design Project #GDP187. The theme for this project is Landscape. There are so many ways to interpret this challenge, this is my take. I have had the Country Livin’ stamp set stuck in my head for some time now. The thought that immediately popped in my head came with this truck. Originally I was going to have the truck in the field with a sky full of hot air balloons. That just got to busy, not the serene feel I was going for. Hot air balloons were a thought because I am originally from Louisville, Kentucky. When this challenge was announced the Kentucky Derby (The first jewel in the Triple Crown) festivities were in full swing. The whole city practically shuts down for a week before the race and parties all day and night.

One of the things on the agenda is always a hot air balloon race. Tons of Hot air balloons fly from here to there, typically right over our house, it was always so neat to see them floating in baskets way up above our heads. I quickly found out, once I left Kentucky, not many know about this historic and huge event, which floored me. The Kentucky Derby for those don’t know, is a celebrated horse race in the horse community. The fastest 2 minutes in sports. The Kentucky Derby is the first jewel in the coveted Triple Crown Thoroughbred Racing. The winner of this race moves on to the Preakness Stakes in hopes of winning the 2nd jewel and then on to the Belmont Stakes in pursuit of the 3rd jewel. The Triple crown dates back to 1875. It is run every May and by June, with luck, there is a triple crown winner. In the history of the event there have only been 13 Triple Crown Winners, the latest was last year “American Pharaoh” Will there be another this year? Keep your ears open for a horse name “Country House”. That’s enough for your history lesson today. Just felt like sharing where my mind was and where it finally landed.

Back to the task at hand! Card making with hot air balloons, or not! At any rate the only thing flying in this now serene scene is a few birds. I used a stencil I created for the clouds from the Rainbow Builder framelit dies. I alternated Pool Party and Balmy Blue to create the sky with the stencil. I sponged on Pear Pizzazz for the grassy field area. I then stamped the tree from the Golden Afternoon Stamp Set in Crumbcake, right on top of the clouds and grass. I colored it in with Old Olive Combo Stampin’ Blends, Crumb Cake Combo Stampin’ Blends Then added the birds from Golden Afternoon in Memento Black. I stamped the truck in Crumb Cake and colored it with Calypso Coral Combo Stampin’ Blends, Crumb Cake Combo Stampin’ Blends and a touch of Bronze Stampin’ Blends. I highlighted parts with a white Gelly Roll Pen. After I got it looking just right, I fussy cut it from the Whisper White Cardstock and attached to the panel with dimensionals along with the greeting cut from the Stitched Oval Dies. The finished panel is attached with dimensionals to a layer of Whisper White, then to a slightly larger layer of Pool Party and then finally to the Whisper White Thick card base. Inside is a sentiment from the Enjoy Life Stamp set and the smaller tree from the Golden Afternoon Stamp set.

Hope you have enjoyed your history lesson regarding the Kentucky Derby, which turned out to have no bearing at all on this card, in the end. So sorry for the dog leg, hopefully you found it interesting. I’m a Demonstrator, which is another way to say educator and I took it upon myself to educate you all about a significant piece of Louisville history.

I do hope you enjoyed my card as well, thank you so much for stopping by and I hope to see you again real soon with another creation. Please do stop by Global Design Project and consider doing a challenge or two. They are loads of fun and encourage creativity.
